Skills for Residential Experiences (Practical)

This course will be run as a residential weekend.

Course participants are required to attend a pre-course planning morning on

Saturday 27 April 9.30 am to 1.00 pm at the Jersey Scout Centre.

During the weekend the sessions and activities will cover the eight core skills required to run a successful residential experience for young people and to gain the knowledge required for the Nights’ Away Permit scheme. The course will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor training providing the opportunity to learn practical outdoor Scouting skills as well as covering the management and organisation involved in running a residential experience. Course participants will be able to camp over the weekend and try out their newly learned skills.

Topics covered:

■ planning a residential experience

■ ensuring effective administration of an event

■ preparing and coordinating a programme of activities

■ choosing and preparing staff

■ choosing, organising and maintaining the right equipment

■ ensuring the health, happiness and safety of self and others

■ identifying and managing risks associated with residential experiences

■ organising good catering

■ making the best of the venue
